ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the state and cultural obstacles faced by LGBTQ activists in Turkey and how these challenges impact their online activism. It examines the current situation and provides a historical account of LGBTQ activism in the country. The chapter discusses the cultural and legal challenges LGBTQ activists face online, analyzing how they navigate them. LGBTQ activists living in repressive regimes may face numerous obstacles, including state-supported oppression, harassment, discrimination, and surveillance, despite the significant role played by online activism in gender movements. Turkish culture is extremely traditional. The dominant ideology of the Turkish state places a strong emphasis on traditional heterosexual relationships and the importance of family values. The history of the organized LGBTQ community is relatively new in Turkey. Online activism has become a powerful tool for raising awareness and promoting change on a variety of sociopolitical issues.
