ABSTRACT

Queer youth advocacy in mainland China enjoyed a brief window of flourish in the 2010s before a harsh crackdown. The political system of China has evolved to contain the socialist agenda of democratization within consolidated ideological control over how democracy is implemented and who can benefit from it. Resistance and empowerment through living the truth mean having a voice in the public discussion of social affairs. In China, the party state vigorously restricts public communication on LGBTQ rights and other civil rights issues, and the societal attitude about queer and feminist advocacy leans conservative. The overrepresentation of youth in queer advocacy leaves a mark on both queer culture and youth culture. In this chapter, the author discussed how queer youth advocacy manages to maneuver through stringent censorship and emerge as a voice for the voiceless in Chinese civil society.
