ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a series of lessons devised at one school to teach children how to understand and manage their feelings, using the Zones of Regulation approach. One lesson was based on the picture book Conker the Chameleon. Others used games like emotion bingo. The chapter explores how the children learned to use a display to show how they were feeling. The impact is described and key lessons drawn out for other schools – for example that children need to be taught that all emotions are normal and acceptable, but for learning we may need to use self-regulation strategies to ensure we are calm and alert. It concludes that using the Zones of Regulation can help teachers identify the ‘under the radar’ students whose emotions they might not have been aware of.
