ABSTRACT

Attempts at locating dance would usually create a reference to a place and a practice. Within social media, “dance is reconfigured as a site of social exchange and engagement by providing the vehicles for sharing and circulating dance” (Bench, 2010, p.184). Some important questions that become pertinent in these contexts are as follows:

Do media prejudices creep into the representation of dance?

Can indigenous dances be framed independent of these representations?

How do we deal with the idea of authenticity in an era of social media?

This chapter is an attempt to deliberate on and engage with critical ideas that emanate in an increasingly networked world of modern-day media.
