ABSTRACT
This chapter provides the readers with an overview of the region and its people. Each of the eight states is discussed, noting the distinctions for each region, which make the people and their cultures subjects of academic interest. The chapter outlines the major traditional dance forms of each of the eight states through a discussion of major festivals. The chapter also discusses the commodification of heritage and dance.
