ABSTRACT

Morans are an ancient Assamese community who celebrate festivals and ceremonies as a central part of their traditional life. Morans were found to be concentrated in the present Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar areas of Assam and in the neighbouring border area of Assam–Arunachal Pradesh. This chapter followed an ethnographic process in examining Bihu performances in four villages. The villages of Kasijan, Kherjan, Kathabosti, and Kulipathar are situated at a distance of over 100 km from the centre of the Tinsukia district. This chapter outlines a brief history of the Bihu festival of the Moran, and also highlights the unique form of the Raati Bihu that is still performed in Moran villages.
