ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the lyrics of “Home” from the Broadway production, The Wiz. The chapter uses the lyrics of the song for the analysis of the place and concept of Home for Faculty of Color working in higher education. The chapter addresses how being in a space that centers on a community can support and facilitate faculty development, personally and professionally, through one-to-one mentoring and group networking; increase cross-institution collaboration and networking opportunities; offer professional learning opportunities; and establish systemic retention efforts for Faculty of Color when they find a community that feels like home. The chapter highlights the concept of being at the margins in higher education and seeking space and community that feels like home. The chapter also offers recommendations on how this can be done through structured formalized networks for Faculty of Color and informally through interpersonal relationships of support.
