ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the out-of-office experiences of a Black, queer tenure-track assistant professor in the deep South immediately following the COVID-19 pandemic. To humanize Black, queer, and minoritized professors, the narrative detailed in the chapter provides an in-depth examination of the sociopolitical and local context surrounding a Black, queer professor during his first three years in a tenure-track position and how he worked to (re)claim space and create home. The chapter concludes with recommendations for minoritized faculty who seek to (re)claim space in adverse environments.
