ABSTRACT

In this chapter, three faculty members offer their counterstories through letters that address how their first-generation college status and social class identities have manifested in their careers and influenced their pathways, purposes, productivity, and professional and personal relationships. The authors share how they have moved from feeling duly alienated from professional and personal spaces to being fully themselves (to some degree) in both spaces. They implore the academy to create more welcoming and inclusive environments for faculty members who live in liminal spaces.
