ABSTRACT

The push to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into the education system has increased since the Final Report by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was released in June 2015. We must be cognizant that educators have been through colonial education systems as learners themselves and must work to disrupt problematic narratives about Indigenous peoples. Educators and Canadians, more broadly, have inherited the falsehoods constructed by Indigenous peoples, which have worked to “justify” the taking of lands and numerous further efforts to eradicate Indigenous culture. As educators, we must work to recognize our own biases due to the socialization of such falsehoods and combat these by centering our learning of Indigenous knowledge from Indigenous peoples.
