ABSTRACT

Latin America and the Caribbean region do not come into popular imagination when discussing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Nonetheless, today twenty-one nations are part of the BRI with China maintaining close bilateral relations with the other countries that have not yet joined the initiative. China has interests in the region and is pursuing to expand its footprints here but the LAC region also has corresponding interests in deepening its relations with China, including through the BRI. This chapter examines the expectations that the LAC region has from the BRI and the potential challenges the initiative faces here.
