ABSTRACT

This volume pushes forward the study of battlefield coalitions, introducing novel arguments about how coalitions evolve over time, highlighting the significance of hybrid coalitions among differing types of actors, and identifying novel ways in which battlefield coalitions affect international politics. These advances, however, introduce associated challenges, including definitional questions about the differences between coalitions and unified actors and empirical questions about the extent to which findings will generalise across different types of wars. Promising avenues for further advances include unpacking the theoretical logic of cooperation in battlefield coalitions and incorporating traditional military variables, such as geography, strategy, technology, and logistics.
