ABSTRACT

During the Sharqi period, many Sufi Saints are reported to have preached and popularized tasawwuf. The Dargahs of the Sufi saints served as a place of salvation, cure and rejuvenation for the society. Almost all the Dargahs of Jaunpur were subjected to free use of verses from the Holy Qu'ran and it has been seen that a great amount of time was also spent in carving out minute details on walls, ceilings, jalis, pillars and domes of the Dargahs. It is one of the most popular dargahs of Jaunpur in present times. The plan of the most of the Dargahs of eminent Sufis in Jaunpur include tomb on the grave of a Sufi, Mosque, samakhana, langar-khana and a baoli. In most of the dargahs, the head side of the grave is having an inscription in Persian or Arabic giving details about Sufis genealogy, not of his ancestry, but of his Silsilah his date of birth and death.
