ABSTRACT

This Introduction orients the reader to the premises and methodology taken by the editors in approaching a new exploration of the psychic substratum of Australia, making use of the developing theory of cultural complexes. A brief historical context is outlined followed by thoughts on the history of studying the Australian psyche. The characteristics of cultural complexes are discussed and the book's six major themes are introduced. These are: “language and the loss of words”, “relationship with the environment and climate”, “migration/displacement”, “indigenous perspectives”, “the image—film/literature/television” and “the clinic”. This book challenges entrenched patterns and encourages a maturing cultural awareness.
