ABSTRACT

Our chapter explores the phenomenon of HIV/AIDS news framing and its impact on both Queer and non-Queer communities. Results from an original research project in which authors examined 1,313 news articles portraying the intersection of the Queer community and HIV/AIDS in the US between 1981 and 2000 will be discussed. This chapter will also explore the social responses to HIV/AIDS and past scholarly literature. There will also be a focus on the false perceived threat of Queer people, harmful discourse of homophobic perceptions that are integrated into oppressive policies, and finally, recommendations for overcoming stigmatized policies.
