ABSTRACT

The concepts of chance, interaction, and civic engagement are defined in this chapter under the three contemporary art genres of socially engaged art practices, tactical media, and games. The 20th-century art periods of Surrealism, Dada, Fluxus, and Situationism, laid the groundwork for contemporary artists to work with the public more directly. Through the description of socially engaged art, tactical media, and/or games as contemporary art practices, this chapter provides a roadmap for art and media educators to develop art content connected to these genres. Additionally, the chapter focuses on how digital technologies can be used as important elements to teach critical thinking and civic participation. The chapter concludes with examples of student and personal work using socially engaged art practices, tactical media, and games as contemporary art.
