ABSTRACT

The general objective of this section is to present the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) as an international organisation showing great potential with regard to disaster risk reduction (DRR) and shaping national security. The foundation of NATO revolves around political and military operations and missions. However, some parts of the organisational domain can be used for DRR purposes. In the context under consideration, the most significant parts are civilian contingency planning, communication and information systems, education and training, logistics, meteorology, and research and technology. NATO’s current activities highlight the Alliance's openness to civil–military cooperation in building resilience to disasters (due to military and non-military threats).
