ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ways in which history is abused on social media in Turkey, primarily by individual citizens. Before that, it tries to answer the question of who uses/abuses history and why. It will discuss the place of ideological and psychological processes in different aspects and dimensions of the uses and abuses of history, the relationship between historical facts, narrated history, political fantasy and fiction. The following section will question historical knowledge's status in the digital age. Mediatisation of history and decentralisation of historical knowledge production in a participatory convergence culture are two major themes of this section. The fourth section will draw on approximately 200 online historical misinformation cases collected, analysed and falsified/verified by the fact-checking organisation Teyit.org.
