ABSTRACT

Although the Polar Code (PC) has advanced maritime safety and environmental protection in the Arctic and the Antarctic, a number of matters discussed before its adoption were not part of its provisions or need to be reviewed further following its entry into force. The present study focuses on some maritime safety and environmental protection issues not provided for by the Code or partly regulated by it and presents regulatory initiatives taken in these areas by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The progress made in this field is important and complements the regulatory framework provided by the PC.
