ABSTRACT

In recent years, it is notable that China has been pushing a narrative about “balance between protection and use” in the context of developing international polar law. This chapter aims to closely examine China’s engagement with existing international polar law and policy in order to draw insights on what exactly does China mean by “balance” and where is the demarcated boundary between the protection and use. By doing so, the chapter also provides some thoughts on the future of international polar law with a rising China.
