ABSTRACT

The essay introduces some current developments in religious education in Europe. The first part includes selected themes from European cooperation. This is followed by a look at the marginalisation of religious education, which can be illustrated by its marginal place in the curriculum and by a lack of training and support for teachers during initial education and continuing professional development. The focus is mainly on developments in England, Germany and Sweden. Thirdly, a European project is presented that deals with issues of International Knowledge Transfer in religious education in Europe. Finally, some further challenges are identified.
