ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that despite the ubiquitous presence of religious literacy in religious education, there are a number of substantive debates surrounding this concept, particularly around what ought to be the relationship between religious education and religious literacy. The concepts of literacy and religious literacy are carefully scrutinised, and it is explained that these are evolving in their range of meanings. In the light of the analysis of these two concepts, it is maintained that there is now an emerging realisation that religious literacy has outgrown its usefulness in being able to frame and justify religious education.
