ABSTRACT

Understanding the lived experience of energy poverty is critical for developing effective solutions to this problem. The lived experience of energy poverty largely depends on geographic, historical, social, cultural, and economic contexts and may vary from place to place. Therefore, the question of how to document and study the lived experience of energy poverty gains importance. This book chapter outlines the process of investigating the lived experience of energy poverty in the Republic of Georgia by using video ethnography. The methodological design of this research can be considered an experimental one, as restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented me from travelling. I asked study participants to depict, on video, energy poverty as they saw and experienced it. The findings of this research will contribute to diversifying the methodological toolkit applied to studying and documenting energy poverty. The lived experience of energy poverty is a complex phenomenon, and having multiple ways of studying and analysing it is important both from a scholarly and practical standpoint.
