ABSTRACT

There are many compelling reasons to use digital technologies in classrooms from motivating pupils and enhancing their learning experiences to facilitating planning and the organisational elements of education. The focus of this chapter is broader and deals with the complex relationship between education, changes in society and children’s lives. The chapter is in three parts. The first is an overview of literature and research relating to the concept of the Digital Age and education. The chapter then looks at how pupils are understood within the Digital Age, research on their engagement with digital technologies outside of school and how this relates to technology usage in school. The third section focuses on how teachers can foster children’s critical, creative and collaborative abilities as these are seen as crucial in ensuring that pupils flourish in the Digital Age.
