ABSTRACT

In this chapter the reader will learn how to teach pupils in their class to “read” and “write” using the media of moving image and sound. By viewing, analysing and discussing short films with the children in class, the teacher can help them to develop a broad range of literacy skills. By giving the children opportunities to create their own short films, teachers can reinforce this learning and enable pupils to explore and value their own creative expression. This chapter enables the reader to critically understand change and continuity in literacy: to have ideas and strategies to promote the “reading” of moving images in the classroom; to have ideas and strategies for how to facilitate children to create or “write” their own short films. Then to understand the benefits and challenges in working with film with children.
