ABSTRACT

Parents are key advisers to children when making subject and career choices, but many are ill-prepared to offer advice about computing’s potential and struggle to facilitate the learning experiences of a child who has an interest in computer science. This chapter outlines an innovative way of working with families with the aim of having a positive impact on parental attitudes to computing. To achieve this, the authors have developed and rolled out a workshop programme called ‘OurKidsCode’ which involves families working together on creative computing projects. This chapter explains the foundations and design principles for this programme so that teachers can adapt it to their context.
