ABSTRACT

Attempts to continue educational provision using digital tools during the Covid pandemic starkly revealed barriers to the use of digital tools for learning by teachers, families and pupils in both developed and developing countries. Two specific problems which need to be overcome if all learners are to have the benefits of access to digital tools are: (1) local community access to the technical knowhow to keep digital devices functional, and (2) upskilling teachers. This case study describes initiatives funded between 2008 and 2016 by the Department of Science and Technology in South Africa to provide solutions to these problems. These solutions may work in other countries in rural areas in particular.
