ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on place-based nature journaling with the goal of incorporating this practice into the classroom routines of young learners. Leveraging the resources from Laws and Lygren’s (2020) book How to Teach Nature Journaling, readers learn how to incorporate a set of simple metalinguistic routines – “I notice,” “I wonder,” “It reminds me of,” and “Should we?” – that allows learners to show how they are engaging with the natural and built worlds around them through authentic writing. While the examples shown here are specific to pre-service elementary teachers who were learning the practice, the application of the writing strategy extends to the school classroom level, serving as an entry point for learners to showcase their explorations and engagement in nature.
