ABSTRACT

Political candidates are incentivized to craft their communication messages in specific ways in order to achieve desired campaign goals. President Trump’s messaging on the “migrant caravan” is no exception. This chapter examines how Trump developed the “migrant caravan” frame and pushed it through his Twitter account to advance his populist rhetoric. The role of Twitter as a catalyst for traditional media framing of migrants as a collective threat as well as the function of the caravan framing at an ideological level among his supporters in the 2020 election are discussed.
