ABSTRACT

During the 2020 presidential campaign, late-night political humor focused on Donald Trump even more intensely than it did four years earlier. During 2020 general election phases of the 2020 campaign, the late-night comics continued to demonstrate their obsession with Trump by margins exceeding the patterns identified during 2016. An examination of the key targets of the humor revealed the nightly entertainers examined here (Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon) offered little commentary on Democratic nominee Joe Biden during the fall of 2020. Three influential once-a-week comedy programs (Saturday Night Live, Full Frontal, and Last Week Tonight) likewise offered a great deal of material on the incumbent president rather than Biden.
