ABSTRACT
The barbarian invaders and settlers in the Western Roman empire presaged a radical civilizational change centered on the embrace of Christianity as a religion rather than as an ecclesial community. The change transformed Christianity from experiential participation in truth to a mode of behavior focused on doctrines, rules, and promises. This transformation also moved the foundation of civilization from the community to the individual, as religions are, by their nature, individualistic.
