ABSTRACT

This chapter explores approaches to fostering business ethics and professionalism among SMEs, with particular reference to micro businesses that make less than a 20 000-rand revenue (US$1 300) on a monthly basis. This can help to improve the image of SMEs while providing an opportunity for them to grow into large businesses. The basis of unethical practices and lack of professionalism are contextual and rooted in a country's history, political development, bureaucratic traditions and policies. Rather than countering ethical and professional challenges faced by SMEs with complex policies or practices, which come with brittle places and blind spots, efforts should be made to instil ethical values and professionalism through direct and indirect means while ensuring businesses adhere to codes of conduct. Considering this dominance, SMEs need to recognise that they need to embrace their ethical responsibilities and professionalism when dealing with stakeholders.
