ABSTRACT

This chapter features an explication of rural news as it pertains to the work of this book. In academic literature, often, there remains a murkiness or lack of precision around the regularly interchangeable usage of terms such as local news, community news, and rural news. Using academic literature from around the globe, this chapter defines and delineates the boundaries of each of these distinct genres of journalism. Ultimately, the chapter concludes with a clear conceptualization of rural news and its unique place within the journalism ecosystem in the United States.
