ABSTRACT

This chapter provides input from rural residents regarding their views of weekly newspapers. Data are derived from the results of a reader survey with a representative sample of residents in the Great Plains area of the United States. Questions focused on potential financial strategies to support local news and reader willingness to do so. Readers in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas provided both quantitative and qualitative suggestions for how they would support local news and what types of content they prefer. This chapter makes a unique contribution in its efforts to directly hear from rural consumers of news.
