ABSTRACT

The cyber-saturated environment equips children and adolescents with a dynamic understanding of information technology and citizen participation through a digital platform. The use of social networking sites has improved the efficiency of social interactions and inevitably increased the risks of cyberbullying. An increasing number of children and adolescents have experienced cyber-related traumatic experiences. This chapter presents an up-to-date review of cyberbullying prevention in China, with the objectives of reviewing studies on the etiological characteristics of cyberbullying perpetration and victimisation, comparing reactions and coping strategies to cyberbullying, online and offline interventions on cyberbullying, and the development of legal measures to protect children in cyberspace. A brief introduction to an innovative digital game to prevent cyberbullying designed for Chinese adolescents is presented in this chapter. The findings may contribute to our understanding of the characteristics associated with cyberbullying among Chinese adolescents, and they highlight the importance of supporting families as a whole in preventing cyberbullying and family victimisation. The 'six-in-one' protection system is key to protecting children from cyberbullying involvement in China. The discussion could also hold implications for future practices and policies in the design of prevention and intervention programs in schools and communities.
