ABSTRACT

Rayne is an adolescent dancer who has a gagging reflex when performing and has tried to control the urge to vomit since her first solo rehearsal several years earlier. In time, her efforts to avoid vomiting on stage included food and activity restrictions. Over several years, Rayne has experienced considerable objective success and praise, above and beyond what is typical for dancers her age. She expended considerable effort trying to hide her restrictive diet, quirky routines, and anxiety from her family, fellow dancers, teachers/choreographers, judges, and the audience. Early on, she received mixed responses from friends about her move to competitive dance. Her family is supportive and eager to help but lacks knowledge and experience to handle Rayne’s difficulties. Her mother contacted you after Rayne begged her for help to control her fear and anxiety.
