ABSTRACT

For many decades’ burnout has been a grave concern for researchers and practitioners due to its personal and organizational repercussions. In this study, we collect data from Indian higher education institutions in India and hypothesize that role stressors - role ambiguity and role conflict are positively related to burnout. Drawing on the transactional theory, we also study the mediating role rumination in the relationship between role conflict, role ambiguity and burnout. The results obtained through structural equation modelling supported the proposed hypotheses. Both job stressors were positively related to burnout, and the faculty’s tendency to ruminate mediated the relationship between job stressors and burnout. Implications of the result and future research directions are discussed.
