ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that debates over the impact of Green Revolution technologies in the campesino sector are also leading to the conclusion that in order to adapt to current processes of economic and environmental change, future technology development strategies must shift their focus. It begins with a brief discussion of the introduction of Green Revolution technology in Latin America. The chapter suggests that the ways in which new technologies were generated and incorporated were heavily influenced by factors of economic policy and sociopolitical power. It discusses two approaches to reorienting ATD: one based on scaling down Green Revolution technologies to fit campesino circumstances; the other based on agroecology. The continuation of a bimodal agrarian structure had important implications for both the sorts of technology that were generated and the ways in which they were incorporated.
