ABSTRACT

The overwhelming response in Canada immediately following the event now known as “9/11” was shock and horror, combined with deep sympathy for Americans who had lost family and friends. After several days of blanket US media coverage of this tragedy, the Canadian response became more complex and ambivalent. Canadians also tend to consider the American Christian Right an American rather than a Christian phenomenon. In short, America is currently terrorizing the world to an extent that far surpasses anything that minority Muslim groups have done and will be able to do in the foreseeable future. Jonathan E. Brockopp might point to clear historical precedents for America's practice of taking what it wants by force, but he would then situate this violent trajectory within a more pervasive insistence on freedom and democracy. In dealing with Islam, Brockopp's position is courageous.
