ABSTRACT

Isaac Mayer Wise was a prolific writer and founded a popular weekly, The Israelite, an English-Jewish newspaper. He entered upon a career chiefly directed toward the organization of American Jewry and soon became one of the outstanding Jewish religious leaders in America. Subscribers to The Israelite, which arrived via mail, paid three dollars per annum, in advance. Various individuals undertook the task of acting as agents for The Israelite: the people collected subscription money and forwarded it to Wise. Wise was in Cincinnati during the Civil War, and Cincinnati was considered a border between free and slave-holding states. The sharp words “emphatically” and “at once” suggest the Board’s urgency and strength of conviction. Moreover, at the same time, the board of directors of the religious school addressed Wise, enclosing a resolution they had Passed that day.
