ABSTRACT

The challenge to reduce the risk of broken attachments and failed relationships between parents and an adopted child calls not only for understanding the risks involved but also for their prevention and treatment. Group intervention was selected as the model of choice for intervening with adopted children and their parents at risk of ending their adoptions and terminating family relationships due to very troubled and emotionally damaging family dynamics. Terminated adoptive placements are “disruptions” that occur before finalization; dissolutions occur only after adoptions are finalized. Many factors have been associated with adoption disruption. Group intervention is viewed as the method of choice as children and adolescents are able to benefit from sharing experiences, validating their feelings, learning from others, learning that they are not alone, and exploring feelings of loss and grief with others in similar circumstances.
