ABSTRACT

As colleges and universities broaden their missions beyond equipping students with the academic skills to excel in their chosen careers, education for socially responsible citizenship, integrity, and cooperative team membership is increasing on campuses across North America. This chapter focuses on one of these institutions and discusses a cooperative arrangement between the School of Social Work and Campus Ministry at Marywood University in which graduate social work students use social group work intervention to enhance the experience of undergraduate students who have volunteered to participate in Spring Break Service Trips to Appalachia. It includes a review of the relevant literature on service learning, a description of the field placements and the work accomplished, and a discussion of preliminary findings on the impact of this group intervention with undergraduate students engaged in service trips to Appalachia.
