ABSTRACT

The University of Michigan is one of the most international universities in the United States. In 1996, one in twelve of all enrolled students came from another country. This chapter presents program information and data from an action research project developed to address the experiences of international families at the University of Michigan. It provides much needed assessment, evaluation, and service offerings for international student families. International families have unique assets and needs that may not be accommodated by regular service providers due to cultural differences. The North Campus Outreach Project (NCOP) was designed as an action research project based on methods for multicultural community development. Focus groups for Asian women were conducted in the summer of 1996 to explore the needs of international families. The NCOP has been governed by a task group that includes students, faculty, and staff at the university.
