ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the dynamics underlying interpersonal coordination of speech articulation and hand gesture movements and their relationship with breathing movements. It was conducted from the viewpoint of a dynamical systems approach, and the experimental parameters manipulated were the relative phase mode and oscillatory frequency of the coordination between articulation and gesticulation. The chapter discusses the results in relation to an intra-personal version of the experiment that shows very similar results and in terms of their implications for emerging interests in an ecological approach to communication. Twenty right-handed students participated in this experiment. The subjects were tested in same-gender pairs, resulting in five male pairs and five female pairs.
