ABSTRACT

The Purdue Three-Stage Model is a general framework for program and curriculum development in gifted education. This chapter provides guidance for teachers and program developers who would like to use the model to develop defensible gifted programs at the elementary and secondary level. It begins with a brief history of the development of the model. The chapter describes the model in general terms, followed by detailed descriptions of how to use the model to develop gifted programs and curricula at the elementary and secondary levels. It addresses research support for the model, strengths and weaknesses of the model, and implementation suggestions and considerations. Process-oriented, elementary implementations of the Purdue Three-Stage Model like PACE frequently use a case study approach for placement decisions.
