ABSTRACT

The Integrated Curriculum Model (ICM) was first proposed in 1986 and further expounded upon in subsequent publications. The ICM synthesizes the three best approaches to curriculum development and implementation documented in the literature for talented learners. Research into appropriate curriculum for the gifted child is rather meager. Current work in the ICM for the gifted has continued to focus on a merger with the curriculum reform principles advocating world-class standards in all traditional curricular areas. The content dimension in the ICM emphasizes the importance of learning skills and concepts within a predetermined domain of inquiry using a deliberate instructional approach. The process/product dimension places heavy emphasis on learning investigatory skills, both scientific and social, that allow students to develop a high-quality product. The dimension of concept learning in the ICM stresses the importance of using a core concept as an organizer within subject areas and as connectors to interdisciplinary learning.
