ABSTRACT
In the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious traditions the concept of god as benevolent and merciful is something taken for granted. For every Jew, Christian and Muslim god's kindness towards and care for his human creatures is axiomatic. It is to be noted, however, that this divine characteristic is not uniquely the property of the great monotheistic religions. Rather it is a theme shared with Semitic paganism.
