ABSTRACT

In 1956 E. S. Kennedy published a survey of 125 medieval Islamic astronomical handbooks (zījes), most of which were not previously known. 1 Since then another 100 works have come to light. 2 Many of the zījes are extant, but only very few have been published or extensively studied. 3 The determination of parameter values used for the computation of tables in zījes is an important topic, since these values may indicate the origin of the tables or may be useful in identifying later related tables. In many cases the parameter values are not explicitly mentioned in the table headings or in the explanatory text and must be recovered from the tabular values.
