ABSTRACT

The German Democratic Republic’s Academy of Sciences is an institution that unites the potentials of scientists and of highly efficient research facilities. The academy includes nearly sixty research institutes dealing with natural, engineering and social science topics. Bearing in mind its responsibility in the field of basic research, the Academy of Sciences, together with the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education, is preparing a “Plan for the Long-Term Development of Basic Research in the Fields of Science, Mathematics and Technology Within the Framework of the GDR Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education.” The analysis and planning activities within the research programs with regard to the major trends of research are performed by the Scientific Councils. The GDR Academy of Sciences has made it one of its most important duties to advise and assist the GDR government in all its efforts toward safeguarding the peace.
