James Laver is one of the great historians of fashion. His conclusions on taste and fashion are the result of a lifetime of study and research. His social acceptability scaling of fashions described here is now a widely accepted concept. His conclusions are drawn from fields beyond women's clothing and extend to furniture and wallpapers.
